ABUJA, April 10, 2025 — The Federal Government has told all Federal Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria to start advertising their job openings to everyone.
This order came in a statement from Boriowo Folasade, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, gave this rule to make hiring fair, clear, and open for all. He wants every qualified Nigerian to have a chance at these jobs.
The Ministry said schools must now share job openings on platforms everyone can see. The statement explained, “The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, has told all Federal Tertiary Institutions with recruitment waivers to put their job vacancies in at least one national daily newspaper, on their websites, and in academic or professional journals.”
Waivers Are Still Okay
This new rule comes after the government already gave some schools permission to hire based on their staff needs. The Ministry said these waivers match their goal to make higher education better by filling empty spots.
But the Ministry warned schools to send their hiring plans to the Committee on Waiver and Recruitment first. If they don’t follow this, there will be punishment.
The statement said, “The Ministry has ways to check if schools follow this rule. Any school that does not obey will face sanctions.”
Schools must also send all their hiring needs to the Ministry for the committee to look at first.
What You Need to Know
In the past, federal schools in Nigeria had a hard time hiring people. They needed to get special permission, called waivers, from the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation. This took a long time and caused delays.
Back in December 2023, at the 67th National Council on Education Meeting, the former Education Minister, Professor Tahir Mamman, stopped this old rule. He said federal schools like universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and monotechnics could hire without waiting for that permission. This was to fix the problem of not having enough staff and to make schools work better.
Now, with this new order from Dr. Alausa, the government wants to make sure everyone knows about job openings. This way, hiring will be open and fair for all Nigerians who qualify.
