WAEC Releases 2024 WASSCE Private Candidates’ Results, Withholds 2,577 Over Malpractice

Lagos, Nigeria — The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Private Candidates, Second Series. However, the council has withheld 2,577 results due to various cases of examination malpractice.

The announcement was made on Sunday through a statement signed by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina. This year’s examination featured a significant innovation with the introduction of a hybrid model combining traditional paper-and-pen tests with computer-based assessments.

Malpractice Cases and Next Steps

WAEC disclosed that 2,577 results, representing 3.96% of the total candidates, were withheld in connection with alleged malpractice. Affected candidates have been advised to visit the WAEC Notice of Examination Malpractice Portal at https://waecinternational.org/complaints to submit their representations.

“All reported cases will undergo thorough investigation, with exhibits reviewed alongside the candidates’ representations. The findings will then be presented to the relevant WAEC committee for final decisions, which will be directly communicated to the affected candidates,” the statement noted.

Participation and Special Needs Accommodation

A total of 68,342 candidates registered for the exam, marking a 20% decline from the previous year. Of these, 65,023 candidates sat for the tests at 5,067 centres across the country.

WAEC demonstrated its commitment to inclusivity by accommodating 157 candidates with special needs, including individuals with visual and hearing impairments.

Results Processing and Release Status

According to WAEC, 62,354 candidates—equivalent to 95.90%—had their results fully processed and released. The remaining 2,669 candidates, accounting for 4.10%, have some subjects still being processed due to errors attributable to the candidates themselves. WAEC assured that efforts were ongoing to finalize the processing of these outstanding results as quickly as possible.

Performance Analysis

The performance breakdown revealed positive trends:

  • 43,923 candidates (67.55%): Achieved credits and above in at least five subjects (with or without English Language and Mathematics).
  • 34,878 candidates (53.64%): Secured credits and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

This performance indicates a 9.35% improvement in the pass rate compared to the previous two years.

Gratitude and Future Outlook

WAEC extended its gratitude to various stakeholders, including government agencies, security personnel, supervisors, invigilators, and examiners, for their roles in the successful conduct of the examination.

“The results reflect the hard work and dedication of everyone involved. We commend the candidates for their efforts and wish them success in their future endeavours,” Adesina remarked.

Candidates can access their results via WAEC’s official website or through designated SMS channels by following the instructions provided on the council’s platforms.
